Who we are
Aqua Weaves is a CSR initiative of NEDFi under NE-Shilp to promote the use of water hyacinth, in the rural areas of North Eastern parts of India, as a raw material for making handicraft products. The initiative has helped skill 600+ artisans, who work both out of the CFC as well as their own units.
The Initiative began when NE Shilp identified the locally growing grass, water hyacinth and it’s under lying potential. After several collaborations with designers from Thailand they have been able to give the wild grass a meaning through a wide variety of useful products.
Where we work
How we Work
NEDFi at their common facility centre in Khetri, Assam has been continuously researching and experimenting with water hyacinth to come up with dyed as well as printed varieties of water hyacinth products. Through their exhaustive research they have also been able to come up with raw material treatment techniques which has made the water hyacinth grass long lasting. They have also explored numerous weaving and braiding structures to develop new products. The initiative has infused modern technology in the traditional process to ensure precision, and consistency in quality.
They continuously train both men and women in this craft at their centre. Apart from this they distribute work in the nearby villages.
They currently sell through their EBO in Guwahati and also supply to stores across India. They also work on orders.
